Southland is New Zealand’s most southerly region and includes the stunning World Heritage ranked Fiordland National Park. Early European settlement in the region was dominated by immmigrants from Scottland and the softly rolled ‘r’s of Southland residents - possibly New Zealand’s only regional accent - are a reminder of that heritage. The region's only city, Invercargill offers a relaxed pace of life with wide streets, little traffic, spacious parks and gardens, as well as striking Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Southland's location allows for common views of the Southern Lights, also known as Aurora Australis.
