Situated on the Mekong and about two hours from Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham boasts beautiful river scenery and temples, including the Nokor Bachey temple, the Phnom Bros Phnom Srey temples and some very fine examples of French colonial architecture and wide parks. Koh Pen island is a quaint and quiet destination which can be explored by bicycle.
There are more worthwhile attractions within the province and with its location on the way to Kratie, Mondulkiri, Rattanakiri and Stung Treng Provinces, it is a nice jump-off point.
The people of Kampong Cham are very friendly and open in engaging with tourists, who are rare compared to other cities in Cambodia.
